When is secure hard drive wiping
the right choice?
Secure hard drive wiping, sometimes called data sanitization or secure data erasure, removes stored information using a verified sanitization process so the data can't feasibly be recovered.
So, can you fully wipe a hard drive and safely reuse it? Yes. When an appropriate NIST SP 800-88 sanitization method is successfully completed and verified, a healthy drive can often be safely reused, extending the life of valuable equipment while still protecting sensitive information.

Hard drive wiping is commonly used when physical destruction isn't required by policy, contract, or regulation and the drive is healthy enough to successfully complete a secure sanitization process. If a hard drive can't be securely wiped and verified, physical destruction or hard drive shredding becomes the appropriate solution.

When is physical hard drive destruction the better choice?
Is physical hard drive shredding always necessary? No. But some situations genuinely make physical destruction the better choice. Organizations may choose hard drive shredding when:

A drive has failed or become unstable and can no longer complete a rigorous data sanitization process.
